Gerry the collaborator...

Collaboration

The 2020 global lockdown has changed the way we do many thing, music is no exception. These new approaches are likely to continue and even may become the norm for the foreseeable. For me one small silver lining in all of this has been virtual music arrangement/production collaboration. With a really modest amount of kit, a decent internet connection and a few basic ground rules, we can work together virtually and deliver fantastic results.

Collaboration process

Initial discussions around song arrangement, key, tempo, genre etc and agree timeframe for project.

Exchange of basic demo files using file management system, ( this can be WAV, mp3 or just a simple audio clip recorded on phone).

Work to build song structure based on agreed arrangement (this is likely to develop throughout the project). Re-share rough demo file and re-group to assess.

Complete final mix and share, carry out critical listening.

Complete and Master and “ publish “ song.

The process above works equally well face to face or in virtual collaboration.

The song might be simple guitar/piano and vocal, it might full band track including virtual instruments or it can be traditional recording using all real instruments, including full drum kit.

At “George’s Place” we have collected a great range of instruments/amps/ mics and pedals to complement the collection of virtual instruments and plugins used to create a great sounding “ in the box” recording.
